Corum Introduces $465,000 Concept Watch With Unique Design, Recycled Materials

Ahead of the Geneva Watch Days exhibit that begins tomorrow, Corum unveils its all-new concept watch that was years in the making and demonstrates the brand’s commitment not only to innovation and technology, but also to the environment. The Concept watch, which retails for $465,000, will be made in extremely limited numbers.

There are several factors that contribute to the beauty of this masterpiece. To begin with, it showcases most of the movement on the “dial” side. In fact, the watch does not have a dial, but rather a back plate, which is made of aventurine. In line, and ranging vertically from 12:00 to 6:00 stacked above the aventurine plate is a mesmerizing flying tourbillon movement that consists of sapphire crystal bridges and plates and is layered in such a way that it looks as if it is floating beneath the anti-reflective sapphire crystal. The CO374 manual mechanical movement, with 17 rubies, beats at 3Hz for incredible precision and boasts a power reserve of an impressive 90 hours.

The 39.5mm Corum Concept watch is crafted out of recycled grade 5 titanium and boasts an unusual shape that is circular but with vertical “wings” on either side. The watch is finished with a blue recycled Velcro(R) textile strap that debut’s the brand’s new adjustment system to ensure a great fit on any wrist. The screwed in case back is an artistic work, wherein the center – where the movement is vertically visible, is set with circles of sapphire crystal to reveal the back of the caliber. On both sides of the movement, the case back is intricately etched with verbiage and arrows describing and pointing to the different movement parts. The windows showcase the tourbillon, mainspring and gear train in all their glory. The work of art and craftsmanship is water resistant to 50 meters.

According to Boon Chong Soon, Vice Presdient of Corum, “The aim is to introduce product orientation for the future of Corum in terms of design, shape and materials. Having all components visible thanks to the sapphire plates requires the highest standard of finishings on each and every single component that align between 12:00 and 6:00, so there is room to view the beauty of the aventurine. It’s not usual to see all the wheels align in a traditional movement especially on a Flying Tourbillon and on top of that with 90 hours of power reserve. The making of the movement requires extreme dexterity from the watchmaker. In this Concept Watch, design is the key element, as it has been a strong part of the Corum DNA since its inception in 1955.”
